Great food, and great atmosphere, in the Los Muertos beach area
I had dinner and cocktails with some friends at Marantina the other night. The food was very good. My friend ordered the ravioli, they were amazing with a very interesting combination of flavors. I had the caesar salad with a vanilla infused dressing and chicken, very interesting combination of flavors. We also tried the kobe sliders, they were yummy. The menu is not very long but it's got a nice balance of appetizers, entrees, sides, soups, salads, and sandwiches. The cocktails were quite good as well, especially the martinis and the margaritas (fresh fruit ones). The space is more n the chic end but the atmosphere is very relaxed. Pricewise, this is the kind of place where you can have a fabulous dinner at an affordable price. Definitely a place to try out when in Puerto Vallarta.
Badly executed, low quality, pretentious food
Last night I took my friend to dinner, some friends said Marantina was great so we took a shot... mistake! Service was very good (opaqued by a cocky Argentinian manager) but the food was just a series of badly executed, low quality, pretentious food. 1 out of 7 dishes that came to the table was good, and at almost 100 bucks final tab i felt ripped off. I am chef so lets review the food. 1) Hummus - ok, but lacked flare, no magic. 2) Salad - vinaigrette was way too strong, overpowering everithing else, isomalt crackers cant be that thick, impossible to eat. 3) Scallops - great dish, full of different flavours and textures, nice one. 4) Duck - again the sauce killed everything else, duck was torn apart into a bad presentation, final flavours not that bad. 5) Ossobucco - zero flavour on the meat and sauce, panela cheese was ok. (Argentinian manager actually gave me a lecture on how shank is cooked, as if I needed it, and swore it was great... but no, it was as tasteless as cardboard, a basic error of not seasoning meat before its cooked, thats cuisine 101 man!) 6) Brownie - good, but came out of a box. 7) Fruit ponche - ok on flavour but again no passion, no flare. I might have had bad luck and had the stewards cook for me but its a definite NO on my list, stay safe and take care.
So glad we discoverd this place!
We were walking around in search for a place to eat and saw this small place with a few outdoor tables. It's very modern indoors but charming on the sidewalk. It's a new restaurant that replaced the Kit Kat. We had the calamari with mango, avocado, beetroot, ginger, orange & jicama for appetizer and it was a great start. For entrees we had the mini-hamburgers (one with goat cheese & cilantro mayo and the 2nd with manchogo cheese, carmel onion & dijon dressing) with fries. Also the Sea bass with mussels in a thai sauce. Both were delicious!
